How to Install a Universal Derailleur Hanger
Fitting your UDH hanger is straightforward, so here’s a quick overview to get you started.
Prepare the Bike
- Shift the chain onto the smallest cog.
- If your derailleur has a clutch, switch it off for easier removal.
2. Remove Components
- Remove the rear derailleur using a 5 mm hex wrench.
- Remove the rear wheel by loosening and removing the thru-axle.
3. Remove the Old Hanger (if present)
- Locate the UDH mounting bolt on the outside face of the driveside dropout.
- Note: The UDH bolt is reverse-threaded (left-hand thread). Turn clockwise to loosen and remove the bolt and washer.
4. Clean the Dropout Area
- Thoroughly clean the dropout and hanger pocket with isopropyl alcohol to remove any dirt or grease. Do NOT apply grease to the UDH hanger or frame.
5. Install the New UDH
- Seat the UDH in the frame’s dropout, rotating it forward until it is fully seated or contacts the rotational stop tab.
- If your frame requires a washer, place it between the hanger and the bolt.
6. Insert and Tighten the UDH Bolt
- Insert the UDH bolt (with washer if needed) through the dropout and into the hanger.
- Important: The UDH bolt is reverse-threaded. Turn counterclockwise to tighten.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 25 Nm (221 in-lb). Ensure the hanger is fully seated before reaching the final torque.
7. Reinstall the Rear Wheel
- Insert and tighten the thru-axle according to your frame’s specifications (typically 12–15 Nm).
8. Reattach the Rear Derailleur
- Bolt the derailleur directly to the UDH using a 5 mm hex wrench.
- Tighten to the derailleur manufacturer’s recommended torque (commonly 11 Nm).
9. Final Checks
- Shift through all gears to ensure smooth operation.
- Confirm the derailleur is properly aligned and moves freely beneath the cassette.
