How to Install a Direct Mount Hanger
Follow our step-by-step guide to install your direct mount derailleur hanger smoothly and
quickly – and to get out on the road as fast as possible.
1. Preparation
- Remove the Rear Wheel: Shift the chain to the smallest cog and remove the rear wheel for easier access.
- Remove the Old Hanger (if replacing): If a hanger is already installed, use the hex wrench to remove it from the dropout.
2. Identify and Clean
- Check Compatibility: Ensure you have the correct direct mount hanger for your frame and derailleur.
- Clean the Mounting Area: Wipe the dropout and threads to remove dirt and debris for a secure fit.
3. Install the Direct Mount Hanger
- Align the Hanger: Position the hanger flush against the dropout, ensuring all holes line up and there are no gaps.
- Thread the Bolt: Insert the mounting bolt(s) and hand-tighten to hold the hanger in place.
- Torque to Spec: Using a 5 mm hex wrench, tighten the bolt(s) to the recommended torque (usually 8–10 Nm).
4. Check Alignment
- Use a Hanger Alignment Tool: Confirm the hanger is perfectly straight. Misalignment can cause shifting issues.
5. Prepare the Rear Derailleur
- Remove the B-Link (if present): For Shimano and some other derailleurs, remove the B-link or bracket axle plate using a 5 mm hex wrench. This allows the derailleur to bolt directly to the hanger.
- Grease the Threads: Apply
a small amount of grease to the derailleur mounting bolt.
6. Attach the Rear Derailleur
- Mount Directly: Bolt the derailleur directly to the hanger using the bracket axle (no B-link).
Tighten to 8–10 Nm - Check Stopper Plate: Ensure the stopper plate on the derailleur contacts the B-tension stop on the hanger, with no gap.
7. Reinstall the Rear Wheel
- Place the wheel back into the dropouts, ensuring proper alignment.
8. Adjust and Test
- Adjust Limit Screws: Set the high and low limit screws so the derailleur moves correctly across the cassette.
- Set B-Tension: Adjust the B-tension screw for proper clearance between the derailleur and cassette.
- Fine-Tune Shifting: Index the gears and check for smooth shifting.
9. Final Checks
- Inspect for Gaps or Misalignment: Double-check all bolts and alignment.
- Test Ride: Shift through all gears to ensure everything works smoothly.
